Collect the Extraordinary.
Preserving History. Documenting Authenticity.
At Merak Coins, we believe every historical artifact deserves more than a description. It deserves a documented history.
Our Certificates of Authenticity and Provenance are issued to identify individual specimens, document their origins, and establish a traceable connection between the artifact and its supporting historical records.
Each certificate carries a unique specimen identification number, allowing collectors to reference their artifact and its documented provenance.
Featured Collection: S.S. Republic Shipwreck Coal
A Piece of Maritime History — Lost in 1865. Recovered in 2003.
On October 25, 1865, the steam-powered sidewheel vessel S.S. Republic sank during a powerful hurricane off the coast of Georgia.
The ship was carrying passengers, commercial cargo, and a substantial shipment of gold and silver coins destined for New Orleans following the American Civil War.
For nearly 140 years, the Republic rested on the Atlantic Ocean floor.
In 2003, Odyssey Marine Exploration discovered the wreck, beginning an archaeological recovery that brought thousands of coins and other historical materials back to the surface.
Among the recovered materials was coal associated with the vessel’s steam propulsion system.
The Republic relied on coal-fired boilers to generate steam and power its paddle wheels. These surviving coal specimens offer a tangible connection to the machinery and everyday operation of a nineteenth-century steamship.
Our Collection
Merak Coins acquired a documented collection of coal attributed to the S.S. Republic shipwreck through Heritage Auctions.
Selected specimens are preserved in their original recovered condition, while others may be carefully separated into smaller collectible fragments.
Each specimen offered by Merak Coins is individually identified, weighed, and documented.
